Twix
Twix is a
chocolate snack or
candy bar made by
Mars, Inc. consisting of a
cookie centre topped with
caramel and coated in
milk chocolate. Being somewhat smaller in cross section than other candy bars, Twix are typically packaged in pairs. Twix was introduced in
1979.
Twix was called
Raider in
Austria,
Belgium,
Denmark,
Finland,
France,
Germany,
Greece,
Italy,
the Netherlands,
Portugal,
Spain,
Sweden,
Switzerland and
Norway for many years before its name was changed in
1991 (2000 in
Finland) to match the international brand name. This name change was met with scorn in
Germany. The
slogan Raider heißt jetzt Twix, ... sonst ändert sich nix ("Raider is now called Twix, ... nothing else changes") has become a
metaphor for botched attempts to make something look more modern by giving it a new,
cool name.
Peanut Butter Twix is also available with
peanut butter replacing the caramel. Introduced in
1983, it was available until
1997. It made a permanent return in
2000. Starting in
2005,
Dark Chocolate Twix became available, with a dark chocolate coating instead of milk chocolate. Starting in
2006 White Chocolate twix became available with white chocolate coating instead of milk chocolate. Discontinued special flavors include 'Chocolate Fudge' and '
Cookies n Cream.
Twix products are also available as
ice cream, including Twix brand ice cream bars, Twix brand ice cream, and Twix brand
peanut butter ice cream.
In
Australia,
Ireland and the
UK a White Twix is available, covered with
white chocolate. In Europe, this was a limited edition. White Twix is now available in the United States, also as a limited edition.
There was also an orange-flavored Twix (limited edition) available in Europe.
Miniatures of Twix can be found in some
Celebrations collections. In Germany, a limited edition type of Twix was released, and was called One Stick Wonders as instead of coming in twin-sticks, it was just one stick. It was discontinued as
Kit-Kat sued them for copyright reasons.
*Twix TV ads in Germany throughout late 1990s advised viewers to take a break.
*U.S. Twix advertisments invite potential customers to "chew it over with twix".
