U.N.L.V. (rap group)
U.N.L.V is a
New Orleans based
gangsta rap crew based in New Orleans
3rd Ward, specifically representing the
intersection of 6th & Barone in their hometown. U.N.L.V. is probably best know for their single
Drag 'Em In The River, a diss of
No Limit Records rapper
Mystikal, later remixed as
diss of
Baby (rapper) of the
Cash Money Millionaires.
U.N.L.V. is an acronym which means "Uptown Niggas Livin Violent". U.N.L.V. started out as one of Cash Money's first acts signed to Cash Money along with other rappers: Pimp daddy, Ms.Tee,
B.G. just to name a few. The original group consisted of three rappers, Lil Ya, Tec-9, and Yella Boy. These uptown representitives broke through hip hop with a style of music that was considered gangsta/bounce, which started a trend for most local
New Orleans rappers. This success lead the group to have helped
Cash Money get recognition from
Universal because of the "Uptown 4 Life" LP, which went gold and later platinum. A year after the release of their last album with
Cash Money, rapper Yella Boy was murdered. This devastated the other two members which then led to hardships for the existing group. They have since then released solo albums, and have been through two different labels, Hard Times records, Blazin South, and now B Real Ent. The groups street credit and history would later make major labels afraid to sign them as an act. Lil Ya, and Tech-9 have both lost their homes to the
Hurricane Katrina disater in
2005.They now reside in
Houston,
TX to complete the legacy of the rap group U.N.L.V.
