Vinton County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. As of 2000, the population is 12,806, the least populous in the state. Its county seat is McArthur6 and is named for Samuel Finley Vinton, a Nineteenth Century congressman from Ohio.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,075 km² (415 mi²). 1,072 km² (414 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it (0.21%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,806 people, 4,892 households, and 3,551 families residing in the county. The population density was 12/km² (31/mi²). There were 5,653 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.08% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,892 households out of which 34.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% were married couples living together, 10.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the county, the population was spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,465, and the median income for a family was $34,371. Males had a median income of $30,936 versus $21,257 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,731. About 15.10% of families and 20.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.60% of those under age 18 and 13.50% of those age 65 or over. Vinton County is the poorest county in the state of Ohio.
