Wappinger, New York
Wappinger is a
town of in
Dutchess County,
New York in the
USA. The population was 26,274 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from the
Wappani Indians that inhabited the area. "Wappani" means inhabitants of the eastern land.
The
Town of Wappinger is located in the southern part of the county.
US Route 9 passes through the town.
A satellite campus of
Dutchess Community College is in the northern part of the town.
The town was first settled around 1659. Wappinger was formed from the
Town of Fishkill.
The population of the Town of Wappinger was 4,389 in 1900.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 74.0
km² (28.6
mi²). 70.6 km² (27.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it (4.62%) is water.
Part of the west town line is located at the
Hudson River, and borders
Orange and
Ulster Counties.
As of the
census² of 2000, there were 26,274 people, 9,793 households, and 6,992 families residing in the town. The
population density was 372.0/km² (963.3/mi²). There were 10,144 housing units at an average density of 143.6/km² (371.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 86.18%

There were 9,793 households out of which 34.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% were
married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $58,079, and the median income for a family was $66,273. Males had a median income of $49,007 versus $31,444 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $25,817. About 3.2% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the
