Yser

The Yser (Dutch: IJzer, French: Yser) is a river that finds its origin in the north of France, enters Belgium and flows into the North Sea in the town Nieuwpoort.

Yser in France

The source of the Yser is in Broxeele, in the Nord département of northern France. It then flows though Bollezeele, Esquelbecq, Bambecque and crosses the border at Houtkerque. It French course is of about 30 km.

Yser in Belgium

It flows through Ypres; during the First Battle of Ypres in the First World War the river was deliberately flooded from Nieuwpoort in order to provide an obstacle to the advancing German Army.
