Zakariya Essabar

Zakariya Essabar is a known member of al-Qaida |
Zakariya Essabar (
Arabic: زكريا الصبار) is, according to the governments of the
United States,
Germany, and other countries, a member of
al-Qaida and an associate of many of the
organizers of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Born April 3rd in
Morocco, Essabar moved to
Germany in
1997, and studied medical technology in college in
Hamburg in
1998. Through the
Muslim religious community there, Essabar met
Ramzi Binalshibh and other members of the
Hamburg cell. Essabar quickly became more religious and less tolerant, and lived for some time at the Hamburg cell apartment. After training in
Afghanistan, he learned combat skills and passport alteration.
After loaning Binalshibh $600 in December of
2000, Essabar is later reported to have delivered the cryptic message from Binalshibh to
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, indicating the date that the
September 11, 2001 attack would be carried out. Essabar may not have known the significance of the date, but he did relay the message, and he moved to Afghanistan just before the attacks (having been warned that travel would be more difficult after September 11). Despite a
German arrest warrant issued a month after the attacks, Essabar remains at large.
